Kilikanoon winemaker Kevin Mitchell will continue to hold a small stake in the business.

ONE of China’s oldest wine companies has taken a majority share in an award-winning Clare Valley winery.

Yantai-based Changyu Pioneer has bought 80 per cent of Kilikanoon Estate Pty Ltd, in its first deal in the Australian market, according to reports.

The deal saw the exit of major shareholder Nathan Waks and other minority shareholders from the winery, established 20 years ago by Mort Mitchell and his son and chief winemaker Kevin Mitchell.

It is understood Kevin Mitchell and managing director Warrick Duthy will continue to keep a small stake in the business.

Kilikanoon, named by James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion as ‘Winery of the Year’ in 2013. is a boutique wine producer exporting to over 25 countries.
