City’super, Hong Kong’s megalifestyle specialty store, has launched its first-ever Georgian wine promotion rolling out in six of its selected stores across the city started from September 19.

The promotion was kicked off with a media and trade tasting at city’super’s Southside store, led by Master of Wine Debra Meiburg, the founder of the Georgian Wine Ambassador education program for Asia.

The event highlighted qvevri wines, showcasing Georgia’s traditional winemaking process. A large, egg-shaped clay vessel that is usually buried underground was displayed at the city’super’s wine cellar.

More than 10 different wines were featured in the promotion, with a focus on amber wine – also known as orange wine.  The wine made from white grapes that are fermented with skins is a distinctive Georgian signature.

In addition to amber wines, a range of wines from white to red and rosé wines are also made available to the market.

Speaking to Vino Joy News, Meiburg emphasized the significance of amber wines, which she believes deserves more recognition. “We, of course, should be making white wine with grape skins,” Meiburg MW said, “this is the missing piece of the puzzle,” adding that amber wines are becoming popular among young drinkers in Asia.

“The young, trendy people really like it, because it is exciting,” she  continued, “it is vigorous; it has a texture in your mouth.”

Meiburg also noted the pairing versatility with Asian cuisine: “they actually go very well with meat, especially pork and chicken, which we eat every day here.”

Yvonne Wang, the senior wine buyer of city’super, further stressed the importance of the campaign in bringing new drinkers to Georgia, which is dubbed as the “cradle of wine” with 8000 years of winemaking history. “We wanted to make Georgian wines with a long history more popular: retail is a good platform that everyone passing by can see these wines … At the department store level, we have customers with different backgrounds in wine knowledge.”

The promotion also marks the debut of two Georgian wineries in the Hong Kong market: Pi and Baia. Akura from Pi Winery, with a limited production of 600 bottles, is sold at HKD 270 in city’super.

Running from September 19 to October 15, 2024, the promotion includes wine tasting at city’super wine cellars every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Customers who purchase three bottles will enjoy a 5% discount, 10% for six bottles , and those buying 12 bottles or more will enjoy a 15% discount.
